Ukigomo

The Japanese maple Acer palmatum ‘Ukigumo’, which translates to “Floating Clouds”, is a cultivar that looks like it was painted by mist and moonlight. It’s one of the most ethereal and sought-after maples for collectors and garden designers alike.

Upright Japanese Maple

  • Seasonal colour Spring: Leaves emerge pale green with white speckles and soft pink edges, creating a dreamy, cloud-like effect. Summer: The pink fades, leaving behind a delicate mix of cream, green, and white. Some leaves may be entirely white or pink, while others remain subtly variegated. Autumn: Foliage turns yellow-orange, adding warmth before leaf drop. Growth & Form
  • Size: Typically reaches 2.5–3 metres tall, with a spread of 2–3 metres, making it ideal for small gardens or containers.
  • Shape: Upright and compact, with short horizontal twigs that give it a semi-dense, sculptural look even in winter.
  • Light: Best color in partial shade, though it can tolerate full sun with protection from harsh afternoon rays.
  • Soil: Prefers moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Mulching helps retain moisture and keep roots cool.
  • Maintenance: Low-maintenance; prune only during dormancy to avoid sap bleeding. This maple doesn’t just sit in the garden—it floats. It’s especially magical when planted near darker foliage or reflective surfaces like water or stone, where its ghostly variegation can truly shine.
