Upright Japanese Maple
The Japanese Maple shrub and tree forms are highly prized garden specimens. The stunning spring display of leaves surpasses most flowering plants. Summer gives another flush of new foliage and autumn’s brilliant colours are superb.
Aureum
A beautiful small tree with bright golden foliage.
Beni Shi En
The long, slender lobes have creamy gold irregular edging on foliage that emerges a rosy red and later changes to purple as the leaves develop and then to orange for Autumn.
Bloodgood
Deep burgundy colour on a vase shaped upright growing.
Butterfly
Acer palmatum ‘Butterfly’ is a stunning cultivar with leaves that are deeply lobed and variegated—green centers edged with creamy white and often tinged with pink in spring. As autumn arrives, the pale portions turn vibrant scarlet to magenta.
Peaches and Cream
Acer palmatum ‘Peaches and Cream’ is a standout among Japanese maples—like nature’s version of a watercolor painting. This cultivar is part of the “Ghost Series” of Japanese maples, known for their ethereal variegation and haunting beauty.
Ukigomo
The Japanese maple Acer palmatum ‘Ukigumo’, which translates to “Floating Clouds”, is a cultivar that looks like it was painted by mist and moonlight. It’s one of the most ethereal and sought-after maples for collectors and garden designers alike.
Yasemin
Large rounded leaves that are deeply incised and slightly dissected. Spring colour is purple and shines.
Upright Japanese Maples vary in size from dwarf varieties through to medium trees and are naturally shapely growers. They are popular for bonsai, feature plantings and container plants.
Ideally Japanese maples should be protected from strong winds, planted where they will receive good light and the root zone kept cool with mulch. The root system is small and non invasive and disease and insect problems are virtually non-existent. If stressed through lack of water, the leaves can burn. Older tree specimens reach around 4m-6m in Australia. Prune to size/shape in late winter if required and fertilise in early spring.
